Dong Yi: An Inspiring Love Story

Another great sageuk story is a 60 episode drama entitled "Dong Yi". This was aired last March 2010 on MBC which was once another hit project by director  Lee Byung Hoon who also produced the successful "Dae Jang Geum".

This drama which was set on the Joseon dynasty captures the hearts of many especially for the youthful viewers since it depicts a love story between King Sukjong (Ji Jin Hee) and Consort Suk--Dong Yi, a lowborn (Han Hyo Joo).

Honestly, I was really curious on how director Hoon would produce another historical drama that could surpass his past projects and would be able to entice viewers as well on his new project.

Like the drama Yi San he made after Dae Jang Geum, the drama slowly showed that many characters are being portrayed by actors and actresses from Dae Jang Geum which also makes viewers excited to see familiar faces making it feel that the producers really trust these actors to fulfill their roles.

The character Dong Yi, played by Han Hyo Joo, is quite similar to Jang Geum. It shows to viewers that even losing your family at a young age one could still keep living and pursuing one's dreams and aspirations. Even though life may be cruel and harsh towards you, there would still be a chance for you to shine and grow.

The story also emphasizes the strong division of the Soron and Noron faction and  of course the great desire to attain power on their hands which actually is the main problem of most  historical dramas.

For this drama having it's unique sense of making each episode an anticipated thing to watch is just amazing. I remember myself not able to stop watching even having sleep and food deprivation accompanied of course from getting constant scoldings from my mother because of being too attached on the television.

The plot is really interesting because the love story between Dong Yi and the King is truly one of a kind especially the fact that Dong Yi is just a lowborn the King Sukjong certainly showed his affection towards her so purely. Any girl would fall for that guy for sure. Certainly Dong Yi is also a girl who has great courage, no fear,  hardworking, absolutely understanding and ever so down to earth; a woman with great character.

From the whole drama, the most unforgettable part for me which also made me cry was when King Sukjong confessed his love to her but then she left the palace because she couldn't let him be with a person having parents that were framed to be criminals. (This was also the reason she went into the palace because she needed to find out who were the ones who framed her family and friends that caused their deaths.)

The scene when they were on the cliff was just so beautiful. When the King asked her to let him share her burden I was like "what is she going to do? will she tell him her past life? does she have any feelings for the king or does she love her orabeoni (best friend of her brother), what is she really going to do? ". She just kept crying and crying which was absolutely making my heart burst from the anticipation of the scene.
But when she said she wanted to be with the King and that was all she ever wanted, I was really overjoyed and my tears kept falling and falling. I was really happy for both of them but somehow I also felt sorry for orabeoni. Their love story is truly heart warming which probably makes the viewers more eager to watch the following episodes.

Usually studying about history is pretty boring but when placed, shown and explained in drama forms we could understand them better. I am really grateful for the producers who are making korean sageuk dramas because it relives the past and it also helps preserve their rich culture and tradition. Though I am not a Korean it seems like watching these kinds of dramas, I really learn a lot out of it.

This drama isn't really that hard to understand because the problem, the enemies, the plot is being shown directly towards the viewers and there are only few scenes that had a twist or that actually surprised me. But overall this drama is another must watch. For those who love watching romantic dramas I think you would surely enjoy this.

There are still many sageuk dramas that I have watched and yet to blog about. So, please comment if you have any questions and suggestions. Thanks :)

Jang Ok Jung: A drama that kept its word "Live for Love"

This recent sageuk drama, Jang Ok Jung, Live for Love is a 24 episode drama made by SBS. The lead roles were Kim Tae Hee and Yoo Ah In. By just reading the title itself, we would all know that this drama circles the life of the most controversial woman in the Joseon Era, Jang Hee Bin.        As I first learned about the drama, I certainly got really excited. I had mixed emotions having joy for having a new and an interesting drama to watch while also having doubts on how the writers would conceptualize Jang Ok Jung's life. If you really are interested in sageuk dramas, you would certainly know that Jang Hee Bin is such an evil character in history as she has been able to shake the strong built government during her time. I was really interested on how this drama would be able to change the viewers perception on Lady Jang and as I just finished watching the drama, I would certainly say this:       It was a WELL THOUGHT drama and I would bow down to the director

Rooftop Prince: A Captivating Love Story

"Even if 300 years will pass... I will still love you" - -- Lee Gak and Park Ha (Best quote ever!)      During my summer vacation, I started watching the new drama of SBS "Rooftop Prince" out of the habit of wanting to watch any sageuk drama that would be showing. But I didn't expect to fall in love with the drama so much. In my ranking of best sageuk dramas, Rooftop Prince became my 3rd best, obviously having my 1st and 2nd, Dae Jang Geum and Dong Yi which I have already reviewed about in my last posts.      So, this time I am giving my insights on another hit sageuk drama for this year, The Rooftop Prince. For the past few weeks, Rooftop Prince have been the hot topic for viewers who greatly enjoyed the drama. The plot of having to time travel from the Joseon Era into the current year is certainly a new and fresh story for the viewers; though now other dramas like Queen Inhyun's Man and Dr. Jin has also incorporated this concept.     I b

My Best Sageuk Drama: Dae Jang Geum Review

This is my first post on this blog and I'm planning to place my reviews towards different sageuk dramas (Korean Historical Dramas)  that I have watched. My first ever sageuk drama is the most popular Dae Jang Geum aired on 2003,  (Jewel in the Palace) which was directed by Lee Byung Hoon and produced by  MBC . The drama starred Lee Young Ae as Seo Jang Geum and with her leading man Ji Jin Hee as Min Jung-ho.         First and for most this is the best Historical Drama for me. This drama has everything you want in a drama. For those who enjoys mouthwatering food, great scenery, costume, outstanding actors and actresses together with different touches of action,  pain, revenge, power, romance, comedy and passion; this drama is the best for you.          Unlike other reviews I'll be writing about how I think about this drama and not the synopsis since almost all reviews do it.      Dae Jang Geum shows great inspiration for women during times when females ar
